Sun is not shining on Supreme headquarter. Especially since his now former creative director decided to leave the company and abandon his role.
Officially joining Supreme in 2022, shortly after the $2.1 billion takeover of VF Corp, Emory had been sowing hints of his intentions for some time.
Rumors of his desire to leave Supreme began to materialize in early August when the designer removed all mention of Supreme from his Instagram bio. Also revealing were the enigmatic hints at his current Supreme status in his Instagram Stories.
A frequent theme in Emory’s social content included song lyrics emphasizing frustration with American multinational corporations, although he never specifically mentioned Supreme.
Now the news is official. Tremaine Emory has definitively distanced himself from the streetwear giant, also making quite serious accusations.
The former creative director disclosed the reasons for his departure in a letter of resignation in which he signaled his belief that “systematic racism was at play within the structure of Supreme” and questioned “the inability to communicate” by Supreme’s senior management.

In the letter, Emory cited the behind-the-scenes cancellation of a planned Supreme collaboration with artist Arthur Jafa as indicative of these issues, adding that Supreme’s leadership has been unable to offer “full exposure to the reasons behind” the cancellation of the collaboration with Jafa.
Following the confirmation of Emory’s departure and the leaked content of his resignation letter, Supreme released the following statement: “While we take these concerns seriously, we strongly disagree with Tremaine’s characterization of our company and the handling of the Arthur Jafa project, which has not been cancelled. This was the first time in 30 years where the company brought in a creative director. We are disappointed it did not work out with Tremaine and wish him the best of luck going forward.”
Having entered the supreme house as the first to hold the role of real art director, Emory had recently made known in an interview his perplexities related to the fashion industry combined with concerns about his health problem.
From these statements, various speculations have arisen according to which Emory’s health problems might have kept him away from the company and from the latest Supreme projects.
But these are just theories. The only certainty is that from today Emory’s attention will focus entirely on his label, Denim Tears – which recently celebrated its fourth anniversary – and on his consultancy work for other successful brands.
