Sand is not just a natural element or a color capable of evoking sunny and paradisiacal landscapes. It is a continuous inspiration that represents the inexorable flow of time inside an hourglass in its numerous symbologies. But the desert is also a unique place of peace, and that of North Africa is a fundamental part of the heritage of Saint Laurent Maison. Not surprisingly, the Yves Saint Laurent museum inaugurated by Pierre Bergé in 2017 is located right in Marrakech. Today, the undulating crest of the highest dune in the desert becomes an influential catwalk for the looks of the new YSL Spring / Summer 2021 women’s collection.
All the codes of the Maison are reinterpreted with essentiality in looks with pure and soft shapes. Knitwear reinvents a thick sweater discovered from the Saint Laurent archives of the late 1960s. The silhouettes are outlined without tightening the body. One-piece suits, with or without sleeves, and flowing blouses paired with minimal shorts, emphasize the search for an essential wardrobe. A V-shaped vest, a jacket with spacious pockets, a long coat with defined shoulders are presented as many new versions of the unmistakable Saint Laurent tuxedo jacket.
The looks of the new YSL SS21 women’s collection feature multicolor floral prints on the tops and chiffon dresses. Saint Laurent sensuality reaches its maximum expression in lace culottes and transparent blouses. The jewels illuminate the soft colors of a collection dedicated to freedom of movement.
The show ends in the dark of the desert, with an illuminated message from the designer of the house, Anthony Vaccarello: I wish you were here.
