Givenchy appointed its new Creative Director: Matthew Williams. Kanye West’ collaborator, ex-creative director for Lady Gaga and founder of the brand Been Trill with Virgil Abloh, Williams is one of the most innovative designers at the moment. And he chose a peculiar way to announce the news. On his Instagram account, the designer posted a vocal message on a black background and by clicking play you can hear the voice of the new Creative Director of Givenchy.
Matthew Williams was born in Manchester, on the 23rd of October 1971. He then moves to London to attend Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design, the prestigious university which alumni include names such as Alexander McQueen. His debut in the official fashion week calendar was in Paris, in 2017, with Alyx, the following year Williams changes the name of the brand into 1017 Alyx 9SM (1017 it’s his birth date while 9SM is the location of the first atelier of the brand at Saint Mark’s Place, New York). During the years the brand joined forces with important fashion houses like Moncler, Nike and Dior.
“I think that William’s modern vision will represent a great opportunity for Givenchy to start a successful new chapter,” said Sidney Toledano, CEO and Chairman of the LVMH group. Williams is the successor of Clare Waight Keller and was one of the main candidates with Marine Serre.
