From next month, the Swedish company Ikea launch a plan to make itself more sustainable with a buy back recycling scheme that will allow its customers to obtain an online evaluation of their used furniture before taking them to the store and give them a voucher to be used on future purchases. IKEA said the vouchers will not have an expiration date, to inspire shoppers to buy goods only when they need them.

Once returned, the furniture will be refurbished and put back on sale at a lower price, offering to its customers an affordable and sustainable alternative. However, some furniture will not be included in the program, like kitchen items, outdoor furniture and fabrics. On the other hand, customers will be able to get rid of their old wardrobes and drawers, tables, chairs and stools without upholstery.

The first country to benefit from this initiative will be the United Kingdom from November 24th and expanded to other 26 countries including Italy, Germany, France, Canada, Japan, Russia and Australia laterThe Buy-Back program will not be available in the United States, as confirmed by the New York Times.

In July, IKEA also presented its first official clothing capsule collection. Nicknamed “EFTERTRADA“, the collection included a t-shirt, hoodie, umbrella, canvas bag, a set of beach towels and water bottles.
