Victoria’s Secret has planned a big comeback.
The underwear brand known for its incredibly sexy and glamorous fashion shows has had to face several critical issues in recent years but does not seem to want to give up. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show will return to the spotlight, bringing one of music’s greatest living legends to the stage.
The fashion house made the announcement official on Tuesday, September 17, via an Instagram post that revealed that Cher will headline the brand’s first major fashion show in six years — and for the first time ever, she will lead a lineup of all-female artists.
The news broke with a video of the 78-year-old superstar singing his 1998 hit “Believe,” which landed on the Billboard Hot 100, giving fans a taste of what they’ll see this fall.
The event formula will remain the one that has always characterized the brand’s shows: a combination of fashion runway and musical performances.
Known for being an annual prime time television event, the VS fashion show has always boasted an arsenal of exceptional models, also called “Angels” of the brand (such as Heidi Klum, Karlie Kloss, Gisele Bündchen and Candice Swanepoel) who walked the catwalk in lingerie and immense angel’s wing shaped structures.
World-famous artists and musicians such as Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, The Weeknd, Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez were invited as guests of honor to sing live, performing on stage while the models walked.
The last such show, however, was in 2018. After that year, the growing negative reputation of Victoria’s Secret, accused of lacking inclusiveness and perpetuating unrealistic beauty standards, prompted the brand to suspend its flamboyant shows.
In 2019, parent company L Brands stated its desire to “evolve Victoria’s Secret marketing” in the absence of the show.
Now the brand wants to dust off its wings, starting with its next 2024 fashion show, scheduled for October 15 in Brooklyn, New York.
“It’s a woman’s world, so it’s understood that you can’t have a fashion show without the mother of fashion herself—@Cher!” the caption reads.
“But she won’t be alone…stay tuned, more announcements are coming to round out our first-ever, all-women lineup,” the message continues.
Indeed, there are rumors of great returns such as that of Gigi Hadid who will once again walk for VS together with another experienced angel, Tyra Banks.
