The Met Gala 2025 already has its place on the calendar, marked for May 5th and the Costume Institute has already started the countdown by revealing, earlier than in previous years, what the theme of the exhibition will be and the consequent dress code of the event. The Costume Institute revealed yesterday that the title of the colossal exhibition organized by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will be “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”.
The theme will therefore analyze the crucial role of clothing and fashion as a broad-spectrum phenomenon in black communities, giving the guests of the event the opportunity to create looks that pay homage to black dandyism and the black designers who marked the past and the contemporary era.
“These are all men who aren’t afraid to take risks with their self-representation.” Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute’s 2025 exhibition, explained in an interview, “They exploit classic forms, but they remix them and break them down in really new ways. I think black men and designers are at the forefront of this new renaissance in men’s fashion.”

On the occasion of the theme chosen by the MET, Bolton wanted to involve Monica Miller, professor of African Studies at Barnard College of Columbia University. His book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity – published in 2009 – inspired the exhibition, offering a vision of black dandyism as not only an aesthetic but also a political and sociocultural phenomenon. The figure of the Black Dandy has adopted the principle of dandyism of “dressing well” by attributing to it precise parameters and meanings that refer to the roots of his community.
Thanks to clothing, the black community has taken on identity, visibility and power.
Along with the theme, the costume institute has already announced the co-chairs. They too, like the famous guests expected on the red carpet of the Met Gala 2025, will be asked to interpret the refined black sartorial style with their own looks. The historic godmother of the event, Anna Wintour, who has presided over the Met Gala since 1995, will be joined by other famous names: rapper (and Rihanna’s husband) A$AP Rocky; Pharrell Williams, creative director of Louis Vuitton’s men’s division; Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton; actor Colman Domingo; and finally the famous basketball player Lebron James in the role of honorary co-president.
