Even though the famous mother of punk fashion, the designer Vivienne Westwood, has left us in recent times, she has already earned a place of honor in history with her subversive work and revolutionary creativity.
Passed away in 2022 at the age of 81, Vivienne was never just a style icon, but channeled her passion for the history of European costume and sartorial techniques into provocative collections full of political meaning.
To once again commemorate her memory, Christie’s is preparing to sell the designer’s personal wardrobe in two auctions, thus retracing the most unforgettable style moments of her life and work as an artist.
The designer loved the theatrical and transformative use of fashion, creating characters and taking a stand, and the lots at Christie’s auction reflect those passions.
“Vivienne Westwood’s sense of activism, art and style is embedded in each and every piece that she created. The pre-sale exhibition and auctions at Christie’s will celebrate her extraordinary vision with a selection of looks that mark significant moments not only in her career, but also in her personal life,” said Christie’s Head of Sale and Director of Private & Iconic Collections, Adrian Hume Sayer. “This will be a unique opportunity for audiences to encounter both the public and the private world of the great Dame Vivienne Westwood and to raise funds for the causes in which she so ardently believed.”
Andreas Kronthaler, husband of the designer who was entrusted with the creative direction of the brand, curated all the special looks that will be on sale at the event, entitled “Vivienne Westwood: The Personal Collection”.
The two auctions will include more than 200 lots spanning four decades of Westwood’s work and cultural change.

Selected pieces include a bold 18th century style corset in silver gray silk taffeta and matching floor-length skirt; a knitted day dress with 3D flowers and a printed dress from the Propaganda collection, one of Westwood’s most overtly political fashion shows.
The live auction will take place in London on 25 June, while the online auction will take place from 14 to 28 June. On the occasion of the event, Christie’s has also scheduled a free public exhibition of the collection at Christie’s London headquarters from 14 to 24 June.
Additionally, proceeds from the auctions will be donated to a number of charities, including the Vivienne Foundation, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders.
