Pop singer Charli XCX will also be among the artists who took part in the soundtrack of the film Barbie, in theaters on July 21st. Just like the film, the songs that will accompany it are also generating ever greater hype, suggesting that our playlists this summer cannot do without a healthy dose of pink hue.
Only recently Charli shared the song that will be part of the soundtrack and regarding her passion for the world of Barbie she also published a post on instagram referring to her childhood memory of a talent show and the beginning of her singing career: “there was a talent competition on the boat and I begged my parents to let me enter. They were certain I’d get on stage and crumble especially as all I wanted to do was sing aqua’s “Barbie girl” a capella, on my own, no musical backing track or anything. I did my hair in pigtails and wore my favorite tartan skirt and sang the song on a huge empty stage whilst my parents freaked out, getting ready for me to have a total breakdown – but apparently i was fine, i just got up there and sang my little heart out and won the whole thing. I’d always loved the escapism my barbies provided me with and its kind of a full circle moment to be a part of this soundtrack and movie. So thank you so much mark and greta for having me.”
It was the producer Mark Ronson and the director Greta Gerwig who proposed to Charli XCX some scenes to choose from, and then composed the song. As a fan of car-themed pop anthems, she was fascinated by a chase sequence and wrote Speed Drive. “I’ve always loved singing about cars. I feel there is an intrinsic link between driving, music and the fact that you feel like a star when you’re in a car.” She wanted Speed Drive to be “a little sassy” and “to be about being sexy.”
“Speed Drive” is a fast-paced banger based on the remix of Toni Basil’s iconic 1982 track “Mickey“.
You recognize it immediately in the verse that quotes: “Ah-ah, Barbie, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind / Jump into the driver’s seat and put it into speed drive,” sung by Charli in the chorus . “Hot, ridin’ through the streets, on a different frequency / Know you know just what I mean, we’re runnin’ through the red lights.”
The pop artist’s release follows that of other stars who published all or part of songs from the soundtrack ahead of the Barbie movie premiere next month. “Dance the night” by Dua Lipa is already a success, but no less will be artists like PinkPantheress and Nicki Minajwho in collaboration with Ice Spice has finally given life to the remix of Barbie Girl by Aqua, entitled “Barbie World”.
