CONTROVERSY OVER ASA BAN ON CALVIN KLEIN’S SHOT WITH FKA TWIGS.

Ora, trattandosi di Calvin Klein, chi conosce lo stile delle sue campaign di Underwear non ha potuto che rimanere disorientato da questo notizia

According to recent updates, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has placed a ban in the United Kingdom on a Calvin Klein campaign published in March 2023 featuring the musician FKA twigs. The ASA said the advert was “irresponsible” and potentially offensive as it apparently “objectifies women”.

Now, since it’s Calvin Klein, those who know the style of its Underwear campaigns couldn’t help but be disoriented by this news.

According to reports, the ASA said that “the composition of the image placed viewers’ attention on the model’s body rather than the clothes advertised, adding that the adv “presented (Twigs) as a stereotypical sexual object”, focusing on her “physical characteristics”.

The advert was investigated after receiving literally two complaints that it was “overly sexualised”.

In a statement, Calvin Klein said “The images were not vulgar and were of two confident and empowered women who had chosen to identify with the Calvin Klein brand, and the ads contained a progressive and enlightened message.”

The artist herself also addressed the controversy in a statement shared on Instagram: “I do not see the ‘stereotypical sexual object’ that they have labelled me. I see a beautiful strong woman of colour whose incredible body has overcome more pain than you can imagine,” and she added “In light of reviewing other campaigns past and current of this nature, I can’t help but feel there are some double standards here.”

On this last point it is difficult to disagree, especially considering that the ASA’s decision came shortly after the release of Jeremy Allen White’s campaign.

In the very recent campaign published in January 2024, almost every inch of White’s body was on display. The same goes for Jenner, who stripped down to her underwear and socks for the brand. Apparently this doesn’t seem to be the same for FKA twigs, whose photo of CK looks paradoxically demure compared to Jeremy White’s shots.

In short, the whole issue raises more questions than answers: why were these ads banned almost a year after they were published? Why were photos of a black woman banned but photos of white men and women left in place? What changes in terms of objectification between the campaign with FKA twigs and the one with Jeremy Allen White climbing the skyscrapers of New York half-naked?

However, on January 10, the ADA ruled that CK’s FKA twigs ad “shall no longer appear in the form complained of.” Which honestly wouldn’t have happened anyway, because it’s a campaign that’s been around for months and has now run its course.
