Today we celebrate World Earth Day all over the world.
To raise awareness of the importance of conserving the Earth’s natural resources, climate change, and pollution (of water, air, and soil) in recent years, Nata has managed to mobilize over a billion people in the 193 UN countries involved.
The roots of Earth Day date back to October 1969, when John McConnell, peace activist and supporter of a greener world during the UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, proposed to establish a day dedicated to the beauty of the Planet. McConnell wanted to raise everyone’s awareness of this beautiful heritage and push institutions and citizens to take care of it.
McConnell’s proposal gained much support, and already the following year, the first Earth Day was celebrated in San Francisco on March 21, 1970. A month later, on April 22, 1970, Earth Day was formed by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. With a purely ecological character, the event involved the United States exclusively. To make it an international event was Denis Hayes, the first coordinator of Earth Day, who managed to cross the boundaries of the event, reaching more than 180 nations.
World Earth Day is probably the most powerful tool for protecting the Planet of all cultures in the world and for all generations.
As required by the United Nations, Earth Day or Mother Earth Day is celebrated every year one month and two days after the spring equinox, on April 22.
Born as a university movement, Earth Day has become an educational and informative event over time.
Each edition of Earth Day has its theme. 2022, announced by the organizers Earthday.org, is Invest In Our Planet.

For 2022 Earth Day, Italia and the Focolare Movement will present the third edition of #OnePeopleOnePlanet, the 14-hour multimedia marathon on April 22 to celebrate the 52nd United Nations World Earth Day. A great media event – broadcast in live streaming on RaiPlay and deferred on Vatican News – for a great world party, which from the Cloud of Fuksas in Rome will launch to the world a strong message of hope and an important call to action for the protection of the Planet. At the center once again are young people, true protagonists of the significant environmental issue.
