Appointed creative director of Helmut Lang in May last year, Peter Do has decided to leave the brand. The news was made official through various statements by both the brand and the designer in the most authoritative fashion publications, such as Vogue.
The decision appears to have come after Helmut Lang, notably, did not present a Spring/Summer 2025 show during the latest cycle of Fashion Week shows.
Do’s show was initially anticipated with great interest, however, his second show received excellent feedback. But despite the apparent progress, Do is also one of the many creative directors to take part in this unpredictable game of chairs that is characterizing the fashion industry in the recent historical period.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Peter for his exceptional creative leadership and vision and wish him continued success in his future endeavors,” Kazumi Yanai, chairman of Helmut Lang, said in the statement.
Do joined Helmut Lang, the Fast Retailing-owned brand, as creative director in May 2023 to oversee all creative responsibilities for the men’s and women’s collections, while simultaneously working on his eponymous luxury line, which he founded in 2018 in New York.
During his year-and-a-half tenure at the brand, Do presented four collections that drew on Helmut Lang’s rich heritage through a mix of modernized suits, shirts and minimalist, functional looks.
In the period prior to Do’s appointment, Helmut Lang’s designs had been handled by the in-house studio team.
“I want to express my gratitude to my Helmut Lang team, who have been integral in supporting my vision. It’s been an incredible journey to be tasked to carry on the legacy of Helmut Lang. I would like to give special thanks to Kazumi for this opportunity of a lifetime and an experience that I will never forget,” Do said in the statement.
On Wednesday, the designer gave a preview of the brand’s spring 2025 collection, publishing an image of the fittings. Pre-fall 2025 will be Do’s last collection with the brand, but in the meantime, the designer will continue to run his increasingly successful eponymous label.
